Dino-mite! Starting to come together

There are so many things I’d like to develop and offer in my Etsy/Folksy shop that I often have difficulty focusing and have ended up feeling like it’s all spread a bit thin. It’s normally through customer requests that I start developing things a bit more logically. I’ve recently had some requests for printed decorations that I don’t currently carry. It’s given me the push to move away from just offering pdf versions of things to keeping part of the fun (cutting and pasting, yeay!) for me. So first up is the Dinosaur suite of stationery and decorations:

There are cupcake toppers too, but they still need to be photographed. Next up pinwheels, bunting banners and party blowers. Then on to all the other party suites and hopefully still time to get Christmas going.

Hmmm the last time I wrote anything here seems to pretty much correspond with my son’s first steps. Coincidence or just a new kind of tired? Not sure, but it’s time I got back on track. I’m going to pick up where I left off with UK Inspiration and Mini Inspiration and see where that takes me. It’s been far too long to go without seeing all the beautiful things people are making.

As well as running around after a (very fast) toddler, I’ve also been busy with graphic design projects, bit of traveling (love San Diego), and adding designs to my stationery range. I’m still focusing on personalised invitations and working on matching thank you cards and decorations. Here are few of the latest. All summer, garden inspired funnily enough:

How is it already Friday? Is it really Friday? I’m pretty sure it’s Friday so here’s my Folksy Friday. This week it’s all about cheese. We love cheese in our house. I am particularly amazed that someone has created a card that actually says exactly what Jeff and I say to each other pretty much on a daily basis. George is fitting in well. Yesterday all he would eat for dinner was a nice vintage cheddar, some Carr’s water biscuits and grapes. Pretty classy for a 10 month old.

Folksy Friday – Gocco

I wanted a gocco machine for ages and I got one two years ago. I think I’ve used it once. Mainly, in all fairness, because I don’t have access to an old-school carbon copier. But it’s still one of my favourite things and finding a way to use it more often is definitely up there on my todo list. When picking products for my Folksy Friday posts, I’ve been finding myself being a bit particular about photography. This is slightly hypocritical as I really doubt I would choose my own product photos:

First I thought about just desaturating the background:

This helps a bit, but to be up to the standard of most other sellers I think I’m going to have to retake all the photos a bit more like this:

The best shots seem to either have a white background or a closeup view. I’m still keeping the flat shots as they’re more descriptive than the new style (and I kind of like them), but the new ones will hopefully be a bit more eyecatching as the lead shot especially in searches. Now all I need to do is see if the baby would like to go back to taking long morning naps so I can have some good light for the photos. Hmm…

little bulldog design

I officially back from maternity leave to my freelance business, little bulldog design, a couple of months ago, but you wouldn’t really know it as not much in the way of work has come in. I blamed it on the recession for a little while, but it quickly became apparent that my clients had either understandably found replacement designers while I was off or there’s just not alot of room for a freelancer who is at the beck and call of a little boy during most working hours. So although I will hopefully still get the odd design job, it’s time to finally take the initiative to create on my own and see where that takes me. As it’s the world I’m now becoming apart of I’ve started with a few baby designs so we’ll see where that takes me.

My website is soon to be revamped but in the meantime I’m starting to post new personalised invitations on Folksy and Etsy, if you haven’t already visited either they’re very addictive and full of amazing stuff you won’t find in any high street shop. I’m also thinking of offering a sort of invitation service for busy yummy mummies – sending out the invites and managing reminders etc. Also on the cards are packs of personalised children’s birthday cards so you can buy them all in one swoop rather than stressing at the last minute.
